Ship competitor pages early. They take months to rank.
Day 3 of 100 days of Growth-Hacking.io. Another day on the website. I spent five or six hours on pages and bugs. I am about 90% through the fixes. This is not the automation content people prefer. It is the larger part of starting: get the site live, then send traffic at it.
Five more pages went out. I also built a competitor-page template. Tomorrow is illustrations and a few leftover bugs. After that, outreach.
Ship competitor pages before they rank
I wrote down a short list of competitors and I am spinning pages titled number 1 alternative to [name]. Get this out of the way early. It takes a few months before those URLs show up anywhere in Google. You can optimise the copy later. You cannot buy back the crawl time if you wait.
The landing page flow
I recorded a longer real-time pass of building and rewriting the landing page. This video is the overview. The flow is:
Open with what we do. A little about us. What makes us different. The features. The problems we solve. Then social proof sitting next to a call to action — that pairing is for click-through. Contact us opens Intercom with a message already filled in. Clear pricing. Two reviews. Then the lifetime deal.
The illustration on the hero is a placeholder. I need a new one. Tomorrow is a design day for that and for the feature pages, which still share the same art.
A lifetime deal loses money after about four months
We will probably pull the lifetime deal soon. You do not profit from one. After about four months you are underwater. The only reason we ran it is capital to put back into the product. My co-founder and I do not take money out of this project. Cash that comes in goes back in.
That money is hiring a backend developer to ship features. I also put up a careers page. If you are a growth hacker and you want to work on this, I am picky, but write. Collaboration is on the table if the work is real.
Affiliate, terms, feature pages, careers
Affiliate programme page with a form to apply for a partnership. Terms and conditions, done. Each feature now has its own page. Copy is mostly finished. Illustrations are not — every feature still uses the same graphic.
That is the five-page drop plus the competitor template. The site is in a much better place than day 1. A few things still need changing. I am at best a junior developer. This is not my forte. I am still shipping it.
Express,
Stripe,
Airtable, Intercom, and
EJS
The front-end is a template. The learning was the rest: Express for the pages and the payment flow, Stripe (one or two issues still), the Airtable API, the Intercom API, and EJS. I also wired an exit-intent survey so we collect feedback when someone leaves the page.
That is why I am doing these MVPs. Money is nice. Expanding the skill set is the point.
Tomorrow is design, then LinkedIn connection requests
Development is far enough along to switch. Tomorrow: illustrations, a few small fixes, then automations. A new feature shipped. I am moving our accounts in and starting LinkedIn connection requests. That is the acquisition work people actually want to watch.
Growth hacking is the site, then the traffic
Nobody starts in a Lamborghini. You build the website, you get the stack standing, then you push traffic and tune the funnel. That is most of the job. The exciting part is later. This week was the unglamorous part, on purpose, early.

Hey guys it's Nathan this is gonna be going over like today's progress and what we've been working on so it has been another day of optimizing the websites this is now day number three and like finally we're getting there I actually really enjoyed this process but it just it doesn't make for that really interesting content that you guys saw I'm sorry about that but I have made like a I think most people prefer to watch like automations and acquisition channels, since what most people are interested in but
anyway so I've made like a load of improvements to the landing page. Listen, I've recorded myself doing it in real time so if you actually want to see me like go through the process of building an optimizing landing page there's like there's there's gonna be another video up that's going to be longer than this this is just like a quick overview drop down here we've got responsible no need updating and yeah and then if we go through essentially it's been like a day of fixing bugs and
I'm like I'm 90% there now I've built out some other pages like for example for competitors and this is quite good to get out of the way. This is quite good to get out of the way so hopefully we can start like ranking for um for some terms like here's some competitors and I've just noted down a few so I'm just gonna get up some pages with like number one alternative to and then I've built this page today that's in the other video and we're going through like optimizing it writing some copy going through the landing page flow so
immediately explain what we do a little bit about us what makes us different what actual features do we have what solutions do we solve I'll update this illustration here I need to make a new one getting into some like social proof with a call to action next to it which should help with click-through rates this contact us button opens Intercom, pre-fills with a message clear pricing and then we go into like two reviews and then after that this is lifetime deal will probably probably be removing the lifetime deal pretty soon because we're essentially you you just lose money on a lifetime deal you don't profit from it it's just a matter of time so
after about four months we actually lose money and then I've built like an affiliate program page which has like a form that someone can sign up for like a partnership I've built out of terms and conditions page which is done and then now like each page has sorry each feature we have has its own page so again I need to work on making some illustrations because currently it's got all the same illustrations but copy it's pretty much done on on all of the pages for tomorrow it's going to be a little bit of a day of design which is good nice to switch art but
like for me it's been a really good week like with these little like MVPs and projects I'm working on a massive thing for me is actually about expanding my like skill set rather than making tools I'm interested in so rather than just focusing on like making loads of money obviously that money is very nice and like the feeling of making like a successful business like no one wants to own a failing business right but just like money isn't the biggest motivator for me I'm really interested in working on projects where I learned something new so
I've built like this entire website not in terms of front-end like we're using a template however I've learned how to use Express like building various different payment different pages I've done like the stripe integration although there's one or two issues there so it's been like a really really good learning process I've really enjoyed it I've learnt way more about JavaScript and like implementing api's and Airtable is integrated here, the Intercom API is integrated now I've had great fun I'm doing this so that's been it's been really good and
yeah what else have we done we've got our exit-intent survey set up for collecting feedback when someone abandons from our page I've also learnt how to do like ejs and various other things and I'm very happy to say like tomorrow I will actually record some content of building out some automations as well we've had like a new feature released so like finally I will get onto that tomorrow I'm going to move like all of our accounts in and start sending out some connection requests so it so
that'll be great so tomorrow is gonna be like design illustrations and maybe like a few little little fixes but yeah I'm happy to have like the development out the way and have like the website in a good position there are still a few things that need tweaking but I'm not a developer like yah know that there are distinctly past my skill set you know like at best I'm like a very junior developer is it's not my my forte but yeah actually that reminds me as well I want to build a page for okay so
yeah there's still like things that need changing but in general we're in a much better position than before so yeah it's been a really productive day for me I probably did about four five maybe more actually maybe like five or six hours of work on just making all these pages and fixing various issues and I'm working on like a number of other projects as well so it's yeah like they're sort of taking up time as one there's a lot of like phone calls and stuff but
yeah to be honest I think that's the update from me like if you want to watch like that a longer video of seeing like me going through like sort of the process of that designing and optimizing a landing page in real time then there's I can offer a longer video up of what I was doing today but this is just like a short and sweet sort of breakdown to show you everything and yeah I've like tomorrow everything should be done and we're going to start on doing building up some automations and
outreach so I'm I'm really excited for for getting sort of both of that and this is just like the process yeah of starting a business I think anyone who has started a business or knows like it's not always like really exciting and it's not always like pushing tons of traffic to your website that that sort of like with the scaling part of it now you know we're starting from scratch so hopefully like this does actually outline the process for anyone who is interested in starting a business like if you're if you're just watching people on YouTube like driving around in Lamborghinis or their Ferraris or whatever it does it doesn't start off like quite like
that you know they've gone through this stage of like having to build the website get everything set up and the truth is is that there's there's there's a lot of work that goes into to building a start-up but I I really enjoy it even if it is like a bit slow for like video content like it may not seem interesting that I've just been building a landing page like this is all part of the process and to be honest this is actually the largest part of the process like as a growth hacker essentially all you're doing is optimizing websites and
pushing traffic to them and optimizing the funnel yeah I've also actually brought up a careers page as well so I was just thinking like if there are any like growth hackers who were like interested in work. We're going to be quite picky but absolutely I'd love to hear from you love to hear what people are doing and and see if there's like potential for a collaboration we're also hiring a back-end developer who's going to help us putting various different like features together and that is also the other good thing about running like a lifetime deal and
for anyone who was wondering the only reason that we have a lifetime deal is so that we can have capital to reinvest back into the project so myself and my co-founder we we don't really need to take out like the money we have on like of a project where we have like money coming in from so any money that is put into this project right now is just reinvested straight back in so we're going to be hiring a developer to to help with releasing features and
then if we have like any growth hackers who are interested as well and helping us grow the business in order to invest more money back into the product then yeah absolutely I'd love to hear from you so yeah it's quite quite a quick video as always like any questions anything like that feel free to leave a comment I'll probably upload all these files tonight so if you have some feedback on on the website as well I'm always open to hearing from people right it's not finished yet so
it may be a little bit early for feedback actually there are a number of issues I'm already aware of but definitely yeah feel free to like take a look at the project and what we're doing so yeah other than that thank you for all of the support as well actually, something I should say that before I finished I get I've been getting like a lot of like nice comments on my videos recently about the content that that I'm putting out and the people like appreciate how like sort of direct and
to-the-point is so like I'm obviously a very, very small YouTuber and I I do I see every single comment and and things that people leave so it's nice it's really nice of my videos aren't like monetized it's not for that financial gain I'm just recording like my hobbies and putting it out there and it's nice to see that people appreciate it so yeah just you're saying thank you for that so other than that yep feel free to leave a comment with any like questions and yeah thank you for watching
